Concerned Over Safety - D-Dot Bus Drivers Organize Rally
DETROIT (WWJ) - Assaults and stabbings - that's been the order of business for D-DOT bus drivers lately. And the union behind those drivers has had enough.
A rally is planned Monday to draw attention to the problem. There has been talk of a sick-out as well - though the local Transit Union President Fred Westbrook says that would be news to him:
"There's no sick out planned by Monday - we plan to rally," said Westbrook.
"I haven't heard that, it's not the talk around the work site, but when people are scared to come to work because they are going to be physically assaulted, you don't know what they are going to do. I just can tell them, as their leader, what I am going to do," he said.
"We've had two operators stabbed, we had a female operator had urine thrown at her and we had an operator jumped on - on the Chene line. It seems no one in the city government or the department cares."
Westbrook says that despite a rally just last month another is needed because Detroit city leaders haven't done anything to help the problem.
