Gleaners Community Food Bank - Cooking Matters Offers Essential Cooking Classes In Several Michigan Counties
Southfield (CW50) - Cooking Matters is a national cooking/nutrition education program. Gleaners Community Food Bank is a partner for Cooking Matters in Michigan and offer Cooking Matters classes in all five counties that they serve (Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Monroe, and Livingston).
Rachel Binder, Program Supervisor for Cooking Matters - Gleaners Community Food Bank joins COMMUNITY CONNECT Host Lisa Germani to talk about what the program has to offer for the people of several Michigan counties.
Cooking Matters has six different curricula. There are Cooking Matters classes for: adults, parents, families, kids, teens, and childcare professionals. The classes meet for six weeks and learn about basic nutrition, how to make healthy food choices, meal planning, saving money at the grocery store, and how to organize your plans for food across your week.
Cooking Matters also has a cooking component to the classes. Each week, each group will make a meal from the Cooking Matters curriculum. Each meal costs $10 to make and all feed at least a family of four. The class emphasizes food safety, as well as reading and understanding recipes.
