Communities, Police Promote Safety During 'National Night Out'
STERLING (WWJ) - Across Metro Detroit and the country, communities are banding together in the 29th Annual "National Night Out" -- an evening promoting public safety and relationships between police departments and the communities they serve.
Sterling Heights, Dearborn and Auburn Hills are among the local cities holding events.
In Sterling Heights, a National Night Out event will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the police department (located at 40333 Dodge Park Rd.) -- and will include demonstrations of public safety equipment and displays from the police and fire departments. Emergency service personnel will speak to residents about established volunteer programs like the Citizens' Emergency Response Team, Neighborhood Watch and the Citizens On Patrol unit. Raffles, prizes and refreshments will also enhance the event.
In Dearborn, a National Night Out event will be held from 5 to 8 pm at the police department (located at 16099 Michigan Ave.) -- and will feature free hot dogs and ice cream, a bounce house for children and a free throw basketball contests with prizes. Officers will also be on hand to display new police patrol vehicles, bomb squad and SWAT team equipment, the department's K9 Unit and more.
In Auburn Hills, a free "CrimeOutAPalooza" event will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Auburn Hills Community Center (1827 N. Squirrel Rd.) -- and will include food, fun, entertainment and education in support of crime prevention. Activities include police demonstrations, fire safety, automotive safety, raffles, games and bowling. Free food samples and beverages from area restaurants will be available while supplies last.
National Night Out, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, is a neighborhood crime and drug prevention event that occurs annually on the first Tuesday in August every year. Last year's national campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states.
