Cold-Blooded Killer, Or Scared Teenager?
Jurors in the trial of a Detroit man charged with killing a police officer will hear closing arguments Monday.
18-year-old Jonathan Belton could be looking at life in prison if the jury finds him guilty of first-degree murder and murder of a police officer. Belton was 16 years old when he and 28-year-old officer Mason Samborski crossed paths following a traffic stop in December 2008. It ended with the officer shot in the head with his own gun at an apartment complex in Oak Park.
The jury begins deliberations today after closing arguments. Southfield attorney Geoffrey Fieger is representing Belton free of charge. Fieger says Samborski accidentally shot himself during a struggle with Belton.
Oakland County Circuit Judge Rae Lee Chabot says that theory is "pure fiction'' with no evidence. Jurors weren't in the courtroom Friday to hear that remark. Prosecutors contend that Belton stole the officer's gun and shot him in the head.
