Coast Guard Air Crew Rescues Stranded Kayaker In Lake Superior [VIDEO]
TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ) - A kayaker was rescued Friday by the U.S. Coast Guard after his boat capsized in Lake Superior.
Officials received an emergency transmission over marine radio around 1 p.m. from a man who said he and three other kayakers had capsized and had become separated from their group in Lake Superior near Grand Island.
A rescue boat was launched immediately from the Coast Guard Station Marquette and a rescue helicopter from Air Station Traverse City was deployed. A rescue crew from the National Park Service in Munising Harbor was also dispatched.
The NPS crew arrived on scene and found one of the kayakers, but was unable to rescue him due to shallow water. The helicopter crew was called over, and they were able to hoist the kayaker to safety.
After being rescued, the kayaker gave information on the other missing people and it was determined they had all made it to shore safely.
"All of the kayakers survived today in large part because they were dressed for the weather, experienced, and had radios to call for help," Lt. Katie Pelkey, public affairs officer at Air Station Traverse City, said in a statement.
