Clerk: 58 Percent Of Oak Park Voters OK Mixed Alcohol Sales

OAK PARK (AP) — Final unofficial election returns from Oak Park show 58 percent of voters supporting a ballot proposal to let restaurants sell hard liquor and mixed alcohol drinks.

The Oakland County clerk's office says that 2,579 people in the Detroit suburb voted in favor of the proposal Tuesday. The no vote was 1,847, or 42 percent.

Oak Park lifted an earlier ban on selling alcohol in restaurants in 2013, when the City Council let certain establishments sell wine and beer. The decision was part of a move by city officials to revitalize the city.

Those in favor say allowing whiskey and mixed drink sales will help the city of 30,000 become more competitive in attracting businesses. Opponents say it could encourage crime.
