Claud Young, Cousin, Doctor To Coleman Young, Dies
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A family care doctor who came to prominence as the health care provider for longtime Detroit Mayor Coleman Young has died. Claud Young's daughter says her 85-year-old father died Tuesday.
Young grew up in Selma, Ala., and graduated from Western Michigan University and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He set up his private practice at the Fourteenth Street Clinic and continued to operate it as the Virginia Park Medical Center until his death. He also played leadership roles in the civil rights group the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Kebina Young says family and his community were extremely important to her father. Other survivors include wife Suncha, sons Claud Jr. and Christopher, and daughter Claudia Young-Hill.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, 6330 Pembroke, Detroit. Visitation is scheduled for 7 - 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Cole Home for Funerals, 16100 Schaefer Hwy., Detroit.
Young's cousin and patient Coleman Young was mayor in 1974-93. He died in 1997.
