Clare's 'Cops & Doughnuts' Has Shot At A Super Bowl Ad
CLARE, Mich. (WWJ) - Clare's "Cops & Doughnuts" is on Intuit Inc.'s list of 20 small business finalists competing to appear in a $4 million 30-second Super Bowl commercial.
Retired police officer Greg Rynearson and eight other Clare cops bought the 113-year-old bakery in 2009, during the low-point of the recession.
Since then, business has been booming and the shop now has nearly 40 full-time employees. They also make their own coffee — in "Morning Shift", "Midnight Shift", and "Off-Duty" varieties — which ships all over the world.
Now, Cops & Doughnuts has been chosen from 15,000 other businesses as a semi-finalist to be featured in an ad that will run in a coveted Super Bowl time slot.
Rynearson told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne he thinks he knows why they were chosen.
"The Cops & Donuts (name) is very catchy," said Rynearson. "We're real cops with real donuts. Our product is all scratch-made right here in Clare."
Rynearson said they all embrace the stereotype that police officers love donuts.
If they win, Intuit will produce the ad.
"They've been researching us and checking things out and doing background checks on us, and they will develop the content of the commercial," Rynearson explained.
