CJPS Medical Systems To Partner With Supplier On Power-Assist Wheelchairs
Auburn Hills-based CJPS Medical Systems LLC said last week that it had an agreement to integrate its novel wheelchair power-assist technology with Ralco Industries' new wheelchairs.
This technology was recently exclusively licensed by CJPS from Independence Technology LLC, a Johnson & Johnson company.
As previously announced, CJPS will mostly focus its efforts in the manufacturing and sales of this power-assist drive system for the aftermarket, specifically for end-users and wheelchair distributors to upgrade existing manual wheelchairs with this system. This technology was previously integrated with a wheelchair frame, and sold by Independence Technology under the Independence iGlide brand.
Ralco will only offer this technology on its own brand of chairs and will become the master manufacturer for factory-installed systems.
CJPS Medical Systems will manufacture the power assist drive systems at its headquarters in Auburn Hills and distribute them on a global basis both to Ralco, and as an aftermarket add-on directly to wheelchair distributors and end users.
This power-assist technology is comprised of a sophisticated and patented mini computer system which allows wheelchair users to move in an effortless and resistant-free manner. Not only does this technology allow the user to move much more easily on rough terrain such as grass or inclines, but it also automatically slows the wheelchair down to a stop when going downhill without having to use hands as the braking system.
The controller and battery are concealed under the seat, giving the appearance of a standard manual wheelchair, and only adding a minimal amount of load, making this powered wheelchair a fraction of the weight of permanently powered ones. The battery is expected to provide up to nine miles of travel on a 3.5-hour charge.
