Civil War Remembrance Invades Downtown Milford
MILFORD (WWJ) - Downtown Milford is going back in time. On June 25 and 26 the Huron Valley Civil War Sesquicentennial Commemoration will transform downtown Milford's Central Park in observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.
Civil War re-enactors, the likes of General Custer and President Lincoln, the 5th Michigan Regimental Band, storytellers and more are all planned for this free, rain-or-shine, family-friendly affair. It's all set to happen from 11 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday.
From noon to 4 pm each day, Milford's historical Oak Grove Cemetery, and both Highland and West Highland cemeteries will honor Civil War veterans.
The Milford Library will present art by Jacob Lawrence, the story of John Brown and a Civil War display. Demonstrations, children's activities and a baking contest will all be open to the public. They will run from 11 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday in Central Park.
Those interested in attending the Ice Cream Social with Mrs. Lincoln may do so for $5. The social runs from 1 to 3 pm Saturday at the Mary Jackson House.
At 4 pm Saturday, June 25, a bride and groom will wed in traditional 1861 style in downtown Milford's Central Park, reflecting the spirit of the festival.
A Civil War Ball complete with period costumes kicks off at 7 pm Saturday at Milford's American Legion Hall.
Play ball, Civil War style at the hands-on Civil War Era Cricket Games on Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. American cricket player and author Tom Melville will be conducting the games.
