Civil Rights Office Opening In Detroit
Details will be released later today on a new civil rights office that'll be opening in the City of Detroit. It'll be run by the Justice Department.
Over the past year or so, there's been a lot of concern over the use of deadly force by police, and the killing of a Detroit mosque leader in a Dearborn-area shoot out.
That's not the only reason, but today the Department of Justice is announcing its creating a new civil rights office. Thomas Perez, assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division, will be on hand at the announcement. The shooting death of Iman Luqman Ameen Abdullah during a confrontation with the FBI raised lots of questions over how the raid was conducted.
The federal government has broad authority to investigate civil rights violations in housing, law enforcement, labor, elections and other categories.
