Candidates, Millage Issues Bring Few Voters To The Booth

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Low voter turnout for Michigan's primary election will have a small minority deciding the candidates and millage issues this election.

The polls closed at 8 p.m.

There were just a handful of people in line to vote when WWJ's Sandra McNeill was at the Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield, but they were passionate about the importance of voting.

Dominique Langford said there were 80 people in front of her when she cast her ballot late Tuesday afternoon.

"I missed the last election, and I was determined not to miss another one. And there is no excuse, the weather is perfect. I've got my daughter, who is impressionable, and I waited until ... we could go and vote together," said Langford.

When asked about the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts) ballot issue Langford said, she felt the language on the ballot made it more difficult to decide.

"Especially when it's not in everyday language, it can be very confusing," she said.

Landford felt she didn't have a lot of information about it before casting her vote and hopes she made the right decision.

Leslie Hardie cast her ballot in Southfield: "I came out to vote - you have to vote," she said.

While Shantel Davis said it was the list of candidates who brought her to the polls, and she voted because she didn't want to have any regrets come November.

Bobby Burton of Southfield thought about the legacy of his grandparents and the "fact that people died for us to have the right to vote," he said.

"It's our civic duty," he said.

Voters across metro Detroit are deciding on dozens of issues.

In Macomb County, Warren is asking voters for new taxes to fund police and fire services. Residents will decide on a five-year, 4.9-mill hike. Warren Fire Commissioner Skip McAdams said the tax is critical.

In Wayne County, Huron Township and Redford Township are asking voters to create special assessments to pay for public safety services.

In Oakland County, Berkley and Highland Township voters are deciding on public safety taxes.
