City Of Southfield Remembers Those Who Served This Country
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The city of Southfield held its annual Memorial for Service Friday remembering those who perished for their country.
Southfield resident Andrew Johnson served in the Army from 1962 until 1965 as a specialist E-5 with Army Intelligence.
Johnson tells WWJ's Newsradio Pat Sweeting that he lost some friends during the Vietnam war and it's a tremendous thing for someone to go to war but he thinks there is a segment of the population who don't truly appreciate what that service means.
"We've got a lot of young people walk around in the United States, in a free country, and they don't understand why it is free," said Johnson. "Who made it free for them?" he asked. "Only a certain percentage of the citizens in the United States made it free for all peoples."
Asked about his experiences in Vietnam ... Johnson declined to share the memories he'd prefer not to resurrect.
