City Of Detroit Pulls Plug On World Series Viewing Party
DETROIT (WWJ) - The city of Detroit has shut down a free World Series viewing party that was set to take place on the Old Tigers Stadium grounds Saturday night for Game 3 between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants.
The MLB-approved event was quashed by the Planning and Facilities Department late in the day.
Group Director of Planning and Facilities Karla Henderson said that the group did not go through the proper channels to secure the grounds for the night.
"The City of Detroit learned Friday night that a Corktown neighborhood group planned a World Series viewing party tonight (Saturday) on the site of old Tiger Stadium at Michigan and Trumbull avenues. The group planned to bring a 20-foot television screen to the site, serve food, and invite the public to watch the game.
"Although the City appreciates the enthusiasm for the Tigers and the community spirit displayed by this group, we have informed them that this viewing cannot be allowed. The organizers failed to contact the City in a timely manner and adhere to proper guidelines for events held on public property, which include an agreement between the event organizers and the City," a city issued statement said.
The city stated it will arrest anyone on the grounds Saturday night for trespassing, because the group putting on the party did not get clearance to use the grounds.
A group of dedicated Detroiters came up with the idea: Organizers had secured a 20-foot big screen, booked DJ's to play between innings and purchased insurance in case anyone got hurt at the event. The goal was to invite everyone to come out and watch it for free on the hallowed ground of "The Corner" at Michigan and Trumbull avenues.
