City of Detroit opens warming centers amid winter weather
(CBS DETROIT) - Amid the winter weather and cold conditions in the Metro Detroit area, the city of Detroit opened warming centers and respite locations.
As the area takes on its first big storm of the year, warming centers are on the ready 24/7.
"When you are in a position where you don't have anything and someone can provide some services and a warming heart for you I think that's what they take away from this…when they come into the centers," said Danieshia Conley, supervisor of the Roberto Clemente Recreation Center.
Conley says she knows all too well how important these services can be.
"Recently we helped an individual that [we've] seen in the back of our actual rec center sleeping. And we brought him in and got him warm, gave him a showed…and food," Conley said.
"With the position that I'm in we are able to help individuals to get out of the cold so they won't be [frostbitten] and sleep in the snow," she added.
Four warming centers are open year-round for people who are homeless and in need of shelter.
Those centers are:
- Cass Community Social Services (Serves families and women)
- Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (Serves families and women)
- Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (Serves single males)
- Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center (Serves men,- women, and families)
Residents can call the city's Housing Services Helpline at 866-313-2520 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Veterans needing shelter can call 866-313-2520 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The city is also opening respite locations during normal operating hours. The locations will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, and reopen Tuesday.
