City Objects To $100K In Bills By Ex-Cop Monitor
The city of Detroit says it shouldn't have to pay the leftover bills of a woman monitoring reforms at the police department before text messages revealed a personal relationship with ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. A law firm, Venable LLP, is seeking about $100,000 for work by Sheryl Robinson Wood and her staff before she quit as police monitor a year ago. She charged $525 an hour.
In a court filing Thursday, Detroit attorney Allan Charlton says paying the bills would be a ``reward for improper conduct.'' Federal Judge Julian Abele Cook Jr. sought the city's opinion.
Since 2003, the police department has been operating under two consent decrees. Wood was the court-appointed monitor before the judge learned she had personal meetings with Kilpatrick when he was mayor.
