DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - In the midst of the hustle and bustle of downtown Detroit, an oasis from the busy nature of everyday life where those who live, work and play in the city can work out, de-stress and find balance.
Citizen Yoga opened this past week in the ground floor retail space of the Z parking structure to large classes -some with wait lists - which filled the uniquely designed studio.
"We are a community-based studio and we like to be more of the pulse of the city in which we reside," said Kacee Must, owner of Citizen Yoga, who first opened a location in Royal Oak in 2013.
In her short time that she has been opened, she was able to become part of the Royal Oak community, and plans to become part of the fabric of downtown Detroit.
"We wanted to come in and start that whole transition from it being a working city to more of a lifestyle city," she said.
To accomplish this, Must has tailored her new 2,300-square-foot studio at 1224 Library Street to the community.
It has an open design which is geared toward social interaction between front desk, a-multi-tiered lounge piece where people can hang out and interact with those placing their jackets and other items into a specially designed cubby.
Included in the cubby are charging stations which allow those taking classes to charge their smart phones. Reclaimed wood and other locally designed pieces of art can be found throughout the studio.
There are also three showers for those who take classes before, or during, the work day to use after class.
The urban, cutting-edge design was created with those who work, live and play in the city in mind. She says it,"fits in Detroit."
In addition the physical structure, she also brings her nearly 20 years of practicing yoga, which includes three years of living in India, to a "different kind of practice" in metro Detroit.
"In one class we can offer the same attention to a beginner that we offer to a person who has been practicing for 20 years," said Must, who offers a variety of yoga classes including vinyasa and slow burn.
Her studio also compliments the unique retail locations in the structure which already features 7 Greens, Punch Bowl Social, Nojo Kicks, along with artwork throughout the district.
"Kacee and Citizen Yoga understood that Detroit is about building communities, and yoga is a huge example of how communities are built," said Dan Mullen, vice president of leasing and development for Bedrock Real Estate Services. "Kaccee with Citizen Detroit recognized there is a great opportunity in downtown Detroit. With her coming into build this lifestyle and community through yoga, just compliments the Z structure and everything around it."
