Citizen Carries Grenade Into Detroit Police Station
DETROIT (WWJ) - Traffic on Gratiot headed into downtown Detroit was briefly re-directed onto side street Wilfred after a scare involving an old grenade.
Police at the Detroit Eastern District station on Gratiot near Gunston got an unwelcome surprise on Friday when a man carrying the weapon showed up to turn the device in.
The building was evacuated and Detroit Police Bomb Squad, together with Homeland Security investigators, removed the grenade and took it to Belle Isle for detonation.
"This is the second time it's happened here in the last two years, so ... fortunately, we were prepared," said Detroit Police Commander Steve Dolunt.
Commander Dolunt stressed that anyone who finds any type of explosive advice to leave it alone and call 9-1-1. Never pick it up, he said, and police will come to you.
No charges were filed.
