Cinco de Mayo Party Fundraiser To Support Hispanic Community
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit area is home to thousands of people of Hispanic descent, and this weekend marks one of its biggest celebrations: Cinco de Mayo.
Centro Multicultural La Familia is hosting a major fundraiser this Friday to mark the holiday.
The organization's CEO Sonia Acosta said they offer many services to local Hispanic community, including mental health.
Acosta said the group reaches out to the local community by meeting those in need in a comfortable setting.
"I think that's the first step. In order to establish a trusting relationship with this community you need to be able to speak their own language," Acosta said. "They need to see that you look like them so they can start to open up, especially with mental health being such a big stigma."
Acosta said the organization assists the community with language training, parenting groups and help with life skills to help families assimilate into their new community.
"Rather then just teaching English ... we teach them something that is going to help them be successful in the U.S.," she said.
The fundraising celebration will feature authentic Mexican food and drink, ballet and Aztec dancers, an art exhibit, an auction, piñata breaking and more. It's all family friendly and open to the public, Friday, May 3 from 6:30 - 11 p.m. at the Oakland County Market.
The public can purchase tickets by calling Claudia Rivera at 248-858-7800 ext. 1006 or visit Centro's website at this link.
