Cigarette Likely Caused Fatal Weekend Cabin Fire

EAST BAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say foul play isn't suspected in the death of a man found following a cabin fire at a northern Michigan resort that was likely caused by a cigarette.

Firefighters responded after the owners of Mac's Landing Resort in East Bay Township reported a fire Sunday morning at one of their rented cabins along Arbutus Lake in Grand Traverse County.

The Grand Traverse County sheriff's department says 47-year-old David William-Richard Thompson died in the fire. According to authorities, he was from Imlay City and moved to the cabin in September. The department says he likely died of smoke inhalation.

Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department Lt. Kyle Clute tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle that "careless use of smoking materials" is believed to be the cause. No one else was injured.
