Child Thrown From Car Seat In Rollover Crash
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Police say a toddler was thrown from a car seat in an early morning rollover crash on the Southfield Freeway.
A total of four people were injured when, at around 3:30 a,m. Wednesday, witnesses said a driver lost control of a 2006 Chrysler SUV on southbound M-39 near Plymouth.
According to Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw, there was an 8-year-old on board, as well as a 3-year-old whose car seat was not properly installed.
"Sometimes when parents get in a hurry and don't actually put it in [according to] the manufacturer's recommendations — sometimes they can fail," Shaw said, "and then the child still ends up being thrown around the vehicle in the traffic crash."
All four passengers, including two adults, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The kids were later transferred to Children's Hospital in Detroit.
Shaw said, when police arrived at the scene, it was not immediately clear which adult had been at the wheel.
"Neither one of them is admitting to driving the vehicle right now," he said. "We have a pretty good idea of who it is, but we want to do some followup interviews just to make sure before we send it up to the prosecutor's office."
Shaw said alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
