Chicago 5, Tigers 0

DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Tigers continue their slow start to the 2nd half of the season, dropping a 5-0 decision to the Chicago White Sox Saturday at Comerica Park.

As heard on 97.1 The Ticket - Max Scherzer got the start for the Tigers and was a workhorse, going 8 strong innings and recording 6 strikeouts on 116 pitches.  He takes his fifth loss of the season.

The offense was absolutely no help to Scherzer , but a familiar face did reappear in the starting lineup.

Carlos Guillen returned from the disabled list, played Shortstop, and batted 7th, finishing with one hit.  Guillen had been out since August 16, 2010 with a knee injury, and received a major ovation when he came up to bat in the second inning.

Along with Guillen, reliever Al Alburquerque made his return from the disabled list, so the Tigers sent down to Toledo pitcher Ryan Perry and 2nd baseman Danny Worth.

Former Tiger Edwin Jackson had a solid afternoon for the White Sox, picking up his 6th win this season.  He received run support from Carlos Quentin's solo homer in the top of the second, and Paul Konerko's RBI single in the top of the third.

The White Sox thought they had their third run in the 7th inning when outfielder Juan Pierre hit a sacrifice fly to right field, but the runner at third base, Gordon Beckham, started home before Magglio Ordonez had caught the ball.

Tigers catcher Alex Avila took the throw from Maggs, threw the ball to Don Kelly at third base, and that ignited an inning ending double play.  Beckham made up for his error with an RBI single off reliever Jose Valverde in the 9th making it 3-0, then the Sox got 2 more runs courtesy of an RBI ground out by Brent Morel, and an RBI single by Pierre.

The Tigers fall to 49-45, 1.5 games out of first place, while the White Sox improve to 46-48, only 4 games out of first.

Both teams celebrated the Negro League weekend by wearing their respective Negro league uniforms.  The Tigers became the Detroit Stars, while the White Sox donned their Chicago American Giants duds.
