Chester Logan To Retire After Detroit Hires New Police Chief
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Interim Detroit Police Chief Chester Logan is planning to retire as the city continues its search to fill the job permanently.
Logan on Friday said he will step down after a new chief has been hired. He has spent 45 years on the force and cited his wife's poor health as part of the reason for leaving.
He spoke about retiring while attending a memorial service for fallen officers.
Mayor Dave Bing promoted the 65-year-old Logan to the chief's office when then-chief Ralph Godbee stepped down in October after details surfaced of a sexual relationship with a subordinate.
A list of candidates for the permanent chief's job has been given to Bing, but Detroit's Emergency Manager Kevin Orr will have the final say in the hiring.
Logan said he did not apply for the permanent job.
Detroit officials say a new chief could be in place by the end of the week.
