Charges In Sex Abuse Of 1-Year-Old Girl
A 31-year-old Mount Clemens man has been arraigned on two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of first-degree child abuse in the beating of a 13-month-old girl — the daughter of his girlfriend.
Macomb County Sheriff Mark Hackel reports that the baby had been left with David Montaldi while the mother went to work.
Officials say he called his girlfriend just before 6 p.m. to tell her that the baby had had an accident — that his 150 pound dog had laid on and injured the little girl.
Police say it was later determined that the child had suffered sexual and other abuses.
"We're still looking at trying to make a determination - -you know, were there any prior physical injuries; could these injuries have sustained at a later date and time, or did this all occur that evening. And many of them were indicated to be fresh injuries," Sheriff Hackel said.
The child remains in critical condition at Children's Hospital in Detroit with skull fractures and severe bruising to her body.
Montaldi remains jailed without bond. Police say Montaldi had been dating the mother for about six months.
