Cavaliers Win NBA Draft Lottery, Pistons Shut Out Of First Round
NEW YORK (WWJ/AP) - The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA draft lottery and will have the No. 1 pick on June 26.
It's the sixth time in the Cavaliers will enter a draft with the first overall pick. The Cavs also had the top pick last year and in 2011.
Cleveland had just a 1.7 percent chance of landing the first pick after missing the playoffs by three games.
Meanwhile, the Pistons Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations, Stan Van Gundy said in a statement to 97.1 The Ticket that:
"Tonight's results are disappointing, but not disastrous. We knew we would lose our pick this year or next. We have the 38th pick and we will continue our evaluation process and preparation for the upcoming draft. We'll also explore other opportunities to use the draft to improve our team - whether that's moving up, moving down or staying at No. 38. We still have many assets and tools at our disposal to upgrade our roster, including the upcoming free agency period in July."
Milwaukee had to settle for the No. 2 pick after having a 25 percent chance of getting the No. 1 selection. Philadelphia had a 19.9 percent chance of winning the lottery but got the third overall choice instead.
Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins or Jabari Parker of Duke are rated the top two players available.
Orlando will pick fourth, followed by Utah, Boston, the Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento, Charlotte and the 76ers.
Denver has the eleventh selection, ahead of the Magic, Minnesota and Phoenix.
According to the NBA's website, the first three picks in the Draft are determined by the lottery and the remainder of the "lottery teams" select in positions 4 through 14 in inverse order of their consolidated standings at the end of the regular season.
The official NBA Draft will be held in New York City on June 26th.
