Carjacking Victim Shot, Killed Outside Detroit Coney Island
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are looking for two suspects who shot and killed a man outside of a coney island on Detroit's east side, and then took off in the victim's SUV.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports the incident took place just after 4 a.m. Thursday at Olympia Coney Island on the corner of Chalmers and Harper, near I-94.
Investigators say two carjackers ran from around the corner of the coney island and ambushed a man in his late 20s or early 30s. The suspects shot the man before taking off in his red Range Rover.
A witness, who police asked not to be named for safety reasons, had stopped at the restaurant for a quick bite to eat when she saw the whole thing unfold.
"I was sitting in my truck and they walked right past me, a blue shirt and a white shirt, they walked right past me and walked over there toward that truck. The next thing I know, I hear a 'pow pow' sound," she said.
"The guy came stumbling from around the building and he told me he was hurt, that he was shot. The next thing I know, he just collapsed right there. So, I ran over and I did CPR on him and I kept him breathing for as long as I could, me and my cousins. When the EMS came, they took over and the bad guys, they already had hit the freeway in the truck. I didn't know what was going on, it happened so fast," she said.
Police are trying to find the license plate number of the victim's stolen SUV in hopes of tracking it down. They are also looking into whether a security camera at the restaurant captured the whole thing on tape.
The witness said she was shaken up by the incident and is disgusted at "what has happened to the city."
"I don't like Detroit, the city, because this is ridiculous. All these people are dying, all of this bad stuff is happening and it's just ridiculous. These people are out here killing people and robbing people for nothing," she said.
An investigation in ongoing.
