Caputo: Three Things The Lions Shouldn't Do In The NFL Draft

1. Don't take an offensive player in the first round - The Lions have taken 14 offensive players, and just four defensive players, in the first round of the NFL Draft since 1999. They have selected as many or more running backs, wide receivers and offensive tackles than they have taken defensive players of all positions in the that span. There is just something inheriently wrong with that from a planning standpoint.
2. Don't draft a project - If a player can't contribute significantly from scrimmage or special teams immediately, pass on him. That is regardless of the round. The NFL is the ultimate live for today league or their won't be a tomorrow for the current front office regime and coaching staff.
3. Don't give up a draft choice to trade up - The Lions have traded up four times in the draft to take running backs since 2004. They still had to spend a boatload of money this off season to sign a free agent running back, Reggie Bush.
