Canton Police Investigate Deadly Crash
CANTON (WWJ) - Police in Canton are investigating an accident that left two young women dead Tuesday morning.
WWJ's Ron Dewey said the crash happened just after 2 a.m. right where Canton meets Belleville.
"We had two cars collide here at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Canton Center Road and unfortunately, we have two that unfortunately didn't make it this morning," said Canton Police Sgt. Patrick Sullivan.
The victims, an 18- and 19-year-old, were passengers in a car heading south on Belleville Road. Their car was hit on the passenger side by a car heading east on Michigan Avenue, said Sullivan.
The drivers of both cars, both men in their early 20s, were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition, police said.
Sullivan said there's no clear-cut reason for what led to the crash.
"At this point, we don't have anything to support that alcohol or drugs were factors, or speed for that matter. At this point, probably, it looks like one of the cars ran a red light," he said.
The intersection was shut down for several hours as police reconstructed the crash, but has since reopened.
Mun Alhadi, the overnight clerk at a corner BP gas station near the scene, said the 55 mile per hour road is too dangerous for traffic lights to flash red and yellow overnight.
"They drive like 70 or 60 miles per hour, a very high-speed for this intersection, and of course, to be flashing lights overnight. I'd appreciate if they can make it like a regular light because over time, it would save lives," said Alhandi.
And Sullivan agrees.
"That's perhaps something that Wayne County should look at, given the fact that it is a fairly busy intersection, it's a big intersection. At that time of the night, it's not super busy, but it is a big intersection," he said.
Police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Names were not immediately released.
