Candy Store Owner Kills Man He Said Tried To Rob Him
DETROIT (WWJ) - A man was shot in killed on Detroit's west side Tuesday as he allegedly tried to rob a wholesale candy store.
According to Detroit Police Sgt. Eren Stephens, the 54-year-old owner of Leddy's Candy Store on Grand River Ave. told police the victim pulled a handgun on him shortly before 1 p.m. and demanded cash. That's when, the man said, he pulled out his own gun and shot the would-be robber.
Stephens told WWJ Newsradio 950 the store owner, who had been in business in the city since 1926, had a permit for the gun.
The victim has been identified as a 40-year-old Walker, Michigan resident -- but no names have been released. An investigation continues.
The prosecutor will decide whether any charges will be filed.
The store owner reportedly had been robbed several times over the past few months.
