Cabrera's Big Night Sparks Offense
Miguel Cabrera went 3-for-3 Monday night, driving in three runs with a two-run double plus a sacrifice fly. His double drove in two because the runners on first and second were the speedy CF Austin Jackson and LF Quintin Berry. For a change he didn't hit to right or right-center, with his double going to left center and the two singles to left.
--RHP Max Scherzer won't make his scheduled start Tuesday night because of a sore hamstring he suffered during the weekend jogging on the Tropicana Field turf in Tampa Bay. LHP Duane Below will start in his place. "He's throwing real good for us now," manager Jim Leyland said. "We don't want to take any chances with him. We do not expect him to miss his next start, which would be Sunday, the last game before the All-Star break."
--RHP Doug Fister flipped his script Monday night. He typically has allowed better than a .300 batting average the first time through a lineup this season and shaved a run off it the next time around. This start he faced the minimum over the first three innings -- a double play erased a walked -- but allowed four runs on six hits in the fourth and failed to retire any of the three batters he faced in the fifth. His control eroded in the fourth and four of the six singles he allowed came on 0-1, 1-2 or 2-2 counts. "I didn't execute in the fourth," Fister said. "I got the ball up. There's a big difference between just below the knees and just above the knees." "He got to rushing himself in the fourth," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's just not real sharp right now. I'm not sure he's built up to where he needs to be. I'm suspicious of that." Fister was on the disabled list after making one start, came back to start five more games and then went on the disabled list with the same left side injury.
