Cabrera Tops AL In All Triple Crown Categories
3B Miguel Cabrera didn't have a spectacular doubleheader Sunday, but he did have an RBI double in each game, giving him 40 doubles for the season. Cabrera and Hank Greenberg (1937, 1940) are the only two Tigers to record 40 home runs and 40 doubles in the same season. The doubles were Cabrera's only hits in the two games.
Cabrera leads the AL in all the Triple Crown categories, batting average (.331), home runs (42) and RBI (133). Texas OF Josh Hamilton is tied with Cabrera for the home run lead. No major-leaguer has won the Triple Crown since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski did so in 1967.
--RHP Max Scherzer didn't have his premier velocity, but he took a shutout into the sixth inning in Sunday's first game. The first three batters in the sixth hit safely, and each scored. Scherzer was throwing his fastball at 90-92 mph, one reaching 94, instead of his usual 96-98, but it had good late life, and he located it well. His changeup and slider were excellent. "I didn't expect that extra zip," said Scherzer, who only lasted two innings in his previous start due to shoulder fatigue, "but at the same time, I didn't need it. I hadn't been working out. Now I'll be on my regular program. I expected to be pain-free, and that's what happened."
