Burst Water Pipe Floods U-M Dorm
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Students at a University of Michigan housing complex were evacuated on Thursday when a water line ruptured and flooded the building.
The flooding began at around 10:30 a.m. at the North Quadrangle on State Street.
U-M spokesman Peter Logan said the situation is under control and students were allowed back in -- except for about 100 who live on the third and fourth floors of the North Quad.
Logan said those students will be placed in temporary housing for a at least couple of days until cleanup is complete. The dining hall will remain open.
"In the meantime, we will find an opportunity, once we have the green light that it's safe to go into that area, to at least students to go in and retrieve any personal items that they need for the interim, even if they can't stay there," Logan said.
"We would imagine that this will be a costly repair of the amount of water damage," he added. "But at this time we haven't even begun to evaluate what that damage may be, because we are still in the process of clean up and recovery."
Officials are trying to determine the cause of the water line rupture.
Classes normally held in the building were canceled on Thursday. No one was hurt.
