Building Fire On Detroit's Westside
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit fire crews have put out the flames at a row of commercial buildings on the northwest side. However, W. Warren at Westwood remained closed Tuesday morning to traffic as firefighters checked for hot spots.
WWJ's Vickie Thomas reports that the blaze started in the D&C Flea Market.
Fire Chief Ed Pomorski said they were able to keep the flames from spreading to the surrounding businesses. But the smoke spread next door to the Dog House Coney Island -- which would normally be doing a brisk business this time of day. Both that restaurant and the neighboring Auto Zone suffered heavy smoke damage.
While crews were able to contain the fire, Pomorski said there will be an arson investigation.
"It looks a little suspicious. We had a smell of gas back there, so we just don't know yet for sure," he said.
As for the cold weather's effect on their efforts to put out the fire, Pomorski added that the temps aren't that bad. "Actually, it's a lot warmer these last few days. It was real bad last week. Today is almost like a summer day compared to what we had," Pomorski said,
