Bruce Power, Inc. Withdraws Request To Ship Radioactive Material Across Great Lakes
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Canadian power company is no longer seeking U.S. permission to ship 16 scrapped generators with radioactive contents across three of the Great Lakes.
Bruce Power Inc. withdrew an application for a transport license from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, to allow further talks with opponents, including native tribes.
U.S. Congresswoman Candice Miller addressed her concerns in a February interview with WWJ, after the Canadian government gave approval to ship the steam generators with radioactive contents.
"With the CNSC issuing their approval of Bruce Power's shipment plan, it is now time for PHMSA to conduct their full and complete review. Given the sensitive nature of this shipment through the Great Lakes and connecting bodies of water, there is zero room for error and we must ensure that nothing is overlooked," Miller said.
Canada's Nuclear Safety Commission had granted its permission to ship the generators, but U.S. approval was also needed.
