Bribery Trial Involving Mail Truck Repairs Starts
DETROIT (AP) - A federal jury in Detroit has heard opening statements in a bribery trial involving the repair of mail trucks in southeastern Michigan.
Postal Service truck supervisor Greg Gorski is accused of steering more than $500,000 of work to Metro Diesel, a Detroit garage. The government says he got cash, sports tickets, free lap dances and a van.
Prosecutors say garage owner Joe Fawaz cooperated with agents to help his wife, who was caught in an unrelated fraud. She got a very light sentence.
Defense attorney Ed Wishnow told jurors Tuesday that Gorski sent mail trucks to Metro Diesel because it did good work, not because of bribes. He says the Postal Service in Ann Arbor had hundreds of vehicles and few mechanics.
