Borgess Adds High-Tech Montioring Of Spine During Surgery
Columbia, Md.-based Impulse Monitoring Inc. said that its intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring systems have been chosen by Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Under the agreement, IMI will provide Borgess with comprehensive IONM services featuring real-time professional oversight by experienced physicians.
IONM assesses neurological function involving the brain, spinal cord and related nerve structures during such surgeries. Use of IONM facilitates the surgical process and can reduce surgical risk by providing alerts to surgeons of potential harm to the spinal cord or neural structures.
"IONM is essential to helping protect our patients from adverse events in their surgeries," said Bob Hayward, director of respiratory, sleep and neurophysiology services at Borgess. "The addition of Impulse and its physician oversight methodology is a critical level of additional expertise and assurance that our patients are receiving the best possible care."
Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, is a 424-bed health care facility serving southwest Michigan. BMC is the only hospital in southwest Michigan that has a comprehensive OR monitoring program for surgeries of the brain, spinal cord and carotid endarterectomies. BMC is part of Borgess Health Network, which includes more than 120 sites of care in 15 southern Michigan cities, as well as eight owned or affiliated hospitals.
