Bomb Scare At Pontiac High School
PONTIAC (WWJ) - Pontiac High School was evacuated Tuesday morning because of a bomb scare.
A 14-year-old boy is being held at Oakland County Children's Village in connection with the incident.
Pontiac schools Superintendent Brian Dougherty said the situation began to unfold when the school day was already well underway.
"At about 9 a.m. this morning district officials in the building were alerted by another student in the building that there was a suspicious item in a knapsack or backpack of some sort brought in by another student," Dougherty told reporters.
"It's disturbing; it truly is. Because we want healthy, clean, safe environments and we go to great lengths to do that," he said. "For whatever reason, there's a trend in America where these kinds of thing occur -- and we take them very seriously."
Dougherty said they isolated the student who reportedly brought the item, called police, and evacuated the building.
A Michigan State Police Bomb Squad and Oakland County Sheriff's officials rushed to the scene and swept the building. Nothing was found.
Students were sent home the day. No one was injured, but many were worried.
"Yeah, I'm scared. That's why I'm like, 'Dad, hurry up!'" one girl told WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell.
Dougherty said class would be in session on Wednesday.
