Man Shot Dead Near Abandoned School On Detroit's West Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - The body of a young man was found near an abandoned school on Detroit's west side and now, police are searching for his killer.
The 19-year-old man was discovered around 4:30 a.m. Thursday lying in a snow bank in the 9200 block of Patton, in a neighborhood near Joy and Evergreen roads.
Police say it appears the man, identified by family members as Patrick Jones, was walking to catch a bus for work when a car with four suspects inside drove past him and stopped. Two suspects got out of the vehicle, according to police, and fired several shots before fleeing the area. Jones received multiple wounds.
Tony Malcolm, who was at the scene as investigators were looking for clues, said Jones is his cousin.
"Only thing I know is I just got a phone call saying he was on his way to work and they robbed and killed him," Malcolm told WWJ's Charlie Langton.
Malcolm is not sure who might be responsible, but he doesn't think Jones was intentionally targeted, saying: "This is Detroit. They do it all the time."
Joseph Chisolm was among other family members gathered at the scene. Many were extremely emotional as officials removed the body for further investigation.
"He was just my little cousin. He was cool. He was a good guy, a good kid. He ain't never meant no harm at all. He ain't never done anything wrong, he was never shiesty or anything. He was just real," Chisolm said.
Timothy Malcolm said his nephew was a good guy just trying to make his way in life.
"He was working at Staff Line right here on Plymouth and Inkster, down off Beech Daly," he said. "It was a new job. He was very excited and that's the only thing he was talking about. He loved it."
Oscar Cheers said it's hard not to feel anything but anger toward the people responsible for this crime.
"I remember growing up, playing basketball with him. This ain't the way I want to see him, out here laying on the ground. This ain't how I wanted to see him," Cheers said. "And for the people who did it, I hope they catch y'all because this boy, this boy did not deserve this at all."
No arrests have been made. Police say they are looking for four suspects, described only as African American males. The suspect vehicle is described as an older-model, 4-door silver or gray car.
An investigation is ongoing.
