Board Asked To Review Pontiac-Sheriff Patrol Pact
Pontiac's emergency financial manager has asked the Oakland County Board of Commissioners to reconsider a contract that would allow sheriff's deputies to take over police patrols.
The Oakland Press says Michael Stampfler last week sent an e-mail and letter making the request to the commission's chairman.
The proposal that officials in the Detroit suburb say would save $2 million annually failed to pass in December, when Democrats held a majority. Republicans currently hold the majority.
The $10.2 million contract calls for 74 deputies to serve the city of about 66,000 people.
Pontiac currently has 51 officers after 23 layoff notices were handed out late last year.
Chief Val Gross previously said a plan he devised to avoid the takeover included wage cuts and a tax increase.
