Blow Past Bus Stop Lights And You Could Go To Jail
DETROIT (WWJ) - There is a new proposal that would see a crackdown on motorists who disobey flashing school bus stop lights in Michigan.
The plan that is going under consideration in Lansing would double the fines for motorists who drive through the flashing red bus lights. The proposal would also make it a criminal offense if any injuries are caused by the driver's carelessness.
Republican Representative Tom McMillan of Rochester Hills said that once the word gets out about the proposal, it could be effective in reducing offenders.
"I would hope that once we see an article that somebody's going to jail for this, I think that'll have an impact as well," McMillan said.
WWJ's Rob Sanford said the catalyst for the proposal was an Oakland County traffic accident that involved a near fatality of a child. At the time, all police could do to the driver was take three points off his license and charge a $250 fine.
