Blizzard Strands Drivers On Hwy. 402
A state of emergency was declared along the 402 highway near Sarnia, Ontario where hundreds of stranded motorists spent a cold night awaiting rescue from a blizzard.
Police in Sarnia, Ont., said drifting snow and zero visibility had trapped about 300 people in some 360 vehicles since Monday on Highway 402, shut down between London, Ontario and the Blue Water Bridge
Jim Vickrey, who drives between his home in Rochester and his job in London, Ontario, said his commute took 24 hours -- but he was prepared.
"If I hadn't been, I'd have been up the creek. I had an extra jacket with me and a blanket, candles -- stuff like that. So, I was able to do what I needed to do," Vickrey said.
Vickrey said he made friends with a trucker, who let him sleep in a bed on the truck.
Stan Korosec is Vice President of Operations for Blue Water Bridge, Canada. Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950, he said police and the military teamed up to assist those stranded drivers.
