Blaze Breaks Out At Detroit Building Under Construction
DETROIT (WWJ) - Construction workers were evacuated after a building they were working on caught fire in downtown Detroit.
The situation unfolded Tuesday morning at the old United Way Community Center at Griswold and State streets, just west of Woodward.
Firefighters quickly responded to the building and extinguished the blaze.
Authorities say it appears the fire started on the building's sixth floor, although the cause has not yet been determined. Investigators say they do not believe arson is involved.
Chief of Fire Operations John King told WWJ's Mike Campbell it was quite difficult for firefighters to reach the flames.
"Number one, you've got to haul line up to the floor of the fire, you've got to get a standpipe system and in this case they don't have one operable, so you've got to rig line back down that aerial later. It just creates challenges," King said.
No injuries were reported.
