Bird Call Man Interrupts Simpson's U.S. Open Interview
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Webb Simpson has won the U.S. Open for his first major title. Simpson closed with a pair of 2-under 68s on the weekend to win the U.S. Open by one shot over Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson.
It's the first major title for Simpson, whose previous best finish in a major was a tie for 14th in last year's U.S. Open.
But, it was an interruption during Simpson's victory interview with Bob Costas that's getting the most attention. Simpson was interrupted by a man making loud bird calls before being pulled away by security and escorted off the course at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Simpson finished at 1-over 281. Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell were a shot back. For two rounds, Tiger Woods seemed to be in command in the U.S. Open. Then came a weekend of frustration that ran his winless streak in major championships to four years as Woods shot 75-73 on the weekend to finish six shots off the lead, tied for 21st.
