Bing's Office Says No To RoboCop Statue
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit is known for its statues like the Joe Louis fist and the Spirit of Detroit, but a monument to RoboCop is not in Mayor Dave Bing's plans for the city.
Bing's office, via the mayor's Twitter account, has said no to a memorial to the futuristic film crime fighter. Despite a tweeted suggestion for Detroit to follow suit with Philadelphia, whose "Rocky" statue is a city staple, the mayor's social media manager said the mayor had no plan for any such monuments.
"RoboCop'' on Tuesday was a top trending topic on Twitter, Tuesday, as the mayor's tweet sparked an online debate.
Some responding tweets, either genuine or tongue-in-cheek, say a statue of the metal alloy-encased cyborg from the 1987 science fiction movie would help bring visitors into the city.
Others argue such a statue would play to the perception that Detroit is plagued by violence.
The 1987 RoboCop film was a Box Office hit, but did cause some controversy due to its depiction of the city as a crime-ridden wasteland.
