Bing: Contract Deal With Police, Fire Close
DETROIT (WWJ) - Mayor Dave Bing says a deal with Detroit police and firefighters may be getting closer.
Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950's Vickie Thomas on Monday, Bing said contract negotiations with the Detroit Police Officers Association produced an agreement on economics but a few things still need to be worked out.
"There was some language, stuff that we had to do. Attorneys weren't available on Saturday, so they should be available today to make those necessary changes," said Bing. "And, once that happens, I think that we will have a tentative agreement with DPOA."
Bing said the firefighters union is expected to follow the lead of other unions.
"Fire is a 'me too' if you will with police, and we do have a few things to talk to fire about as it relates to work rules," said Bing. "But as far as the economics are concerned, as long as they're on parity with police they're OK."
Bing last week announced that the city had reached a tentative contract agreement with a major coalition of unions that represent about 6,000 non-uniform city workers.
These developments come a state review team is inspecting Detroit's finances as part of the process to determine if an emergency manager is needed.
