Bill's Blog: Penn State Did The Right Thing
Call it a PR move, call it whatever you want but Penn State did what they had to do and what they should have done. They fired legendary football coach Joe Paterno. They fired Joe Pa because he, along with many others, decided to sweep the Jerry Sandusky child sexual molestation under the rug.
I give credit to PSU because it probably wasn't an easy decision to make. Paterno is the winningest coach in college football history. He's been with the university for 61 years. He IS the face of Penn State but...he was wrong. Not only is he wrong, I really don't think Joe Pa fully gets it.
His message to well-wishers outside of his home was, "Get a good night's sleep, study. We've still got things to do." He also said, "Thanks. And pray a little bit for those victims."...uh, how about pray A LOT for those victims because those kids who were...let's just cut to the chase, raped by Jerry Sandusky, will live with this for the rest of their lives.
Sandusky, who I frankly consider a piece of human garbage, preyed on these young boys. These poor kids who probably thought that being able to participate in football activities at Penn State was a dream come true and was the greatest thing to happen to them in their young lives. It instead became a nightmare that will haunt them for their remaining days.
And for Paterno and others to never report any of this to the police, is unforgivable. This is bigger than football, bigger than Joe Pa's legacy and bigger than Penn State University. This is about human decency and putting an innocent child's well being in front of your own selfish needs. I don't care if Paterno had won 45 National Championships.
The fact that he knew this had been going on and STILL let soon-to-be prison bitch Jerry Sandusky have an office at PSU, is beyond logical. Penn State had to let Joe Pa go. If he was allowed to coach even one more game, the university would be viewed as putting football ahead of these kids. Joe Pa is right about one thing and if it's your thing, definitely pray for these kids. They need it.
