Bill Introduced In Lansing Would Ban 'Spice,' K2
LANSING (WWJ) - A Michigan lawmaker says he has a plan to ban the leading brands of synthetic marijuana -- 'Spice' and K2.
Current state law makes it illegal to possess certain forms of the fake pot, but not all.
"There's basically kind of a loophole in the law," said State Senator Dave Hildenbrand. "We had to make the law so specific, on a specific drug, that manufactures were finding ways to kind of creatively manufacture them, alter the chemical compound a little bit, and then there was a loophole that they couldn't be prosecuted for possession or sale of the drug."
Hildenbrand said the bill, introduced on Wednesday, would update the list of outlawed chemical cocktails and help law enforcement officers keep up with the ever-changing nature of the drugs.
The synthetic marijuana issue of has been raised in connection with a recent murder case in Farmington Hills. An alleged friend of a 19-year-old man charged with beating his father to death told local reporters they'd been getting high on K2 together on the day of the crime.
