Big Night For Detroit At Grammy Awards
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's Grammys night, a big night for many artists including Detroit rapper Eminem, who is nominated for 10 awards, including best album for "Recovery".
But there are other big names tonight and WWJ's Zahra Huber spoke with Shay from sister station 98.7 Amp Radio to get the latest. "I can see him taking home at least half of those, (10 nominations) which is huge, for one, he is from Detroit and two, he is a rap artist, to take home that many, is a major, major thing." Recovery was 2010 best-selling album and marked a major comeback for Eminem who had been addled by a prescription drug addition.
The Grammys will not be without drama. "I tell you who it's good to see back at the Grammy's though, especially since it's been a couple of years since the big ordeal: Rihanna, she's back and Of course she is one Eminem's track, 'Love The Way You Lie' which is up for several Grammy nominations. So that is good for her. And Chris Brown is back, hopefully they will be there together, (although) there is that restraining order ordeal where he is not supposed to come within 300 feet of her, so we will see what happens with that," Shay says.
And we'll be seeing some new artists such as Drake and Bruno Mars. Travis Wright, a writer with the Metro Times, says we're entering a music culture that a little like 1998 all over again.
"We were kind of in the thickets of pop music at the turn of the century there, and a lot of that was kind of exemplified as Grammy nominations. There is definitely a pop resurgence in terms of saccharin sweet pop music, in both Drake and Bruno Mars can put out saccharin sweet pop music and direct it as hip-trendy rhythm and blues," says Wright.
"One of the new guys that's on the scene, is up for seven Grammy nominations who is right behind Eminem is Bruno Mars, so back to that soulful singing," Shay added.
The Grammy's take place Sunday night at 8 p.m. on CBS.
