Stoney's Blog: Big 10 Comes Up Small
With 11 institutions of higher learning and Ohio State in the conference,one would think that the Big 10 could come up with both a nice new logo and cool names for its football divisions. Well bury that fantasy. The Big 10 announced that the divisions would be named Leaders and Legends. Hmm I don't know about you, but two divisions that start with the letter L for loser. Not too smart if you ask me. Plus since the University of Michigan actually mentions the word leader in their fight song,one would assume that they would be in the Leaders division. Wrongo wolverine breath. The Maize and Blue are in the Legends division.
I know that since the divisions are not arranged geographically that names such as North and South were not possible,but Legends and Leaders? Ugh. I understand that naming them after legendary coaches such as Schembechler and Hayes would leave out the other 10 schools, but Legends and Leaders?
If I am going to rip the selections what about alternatives. I like Plains and Lakes or even Stars and Stripes. I am sure other minds sharper than mine can come up with better names than my suggestions too, but Legends and Leaders?
Oh yes the logo. I am certainly not an artist, but that logo, Wow. I think my ten year old daughters can come up with something more creative than that piece of crap. Obviously the more important matter is the quality of football in the conference and hopefully the play can be legendary while leading the country because their division names are neither.
