Bidding War For Gibby's World Series Bat
Bidding for the bat former Tiger Kirk Gibson used to hit an historic home run during the 1988 World Series has reached nearly 91 thousand dollars, with several days to go before the auction closes.
Gibson, now manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks and a Michigan native, hit a three-run homer in a pinch-hitting role to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a come-from-behind Game One victory over the Oakland Athletics. The stunned A's never recovered; the Dodgers won the Series in five games. It was Gibson's only appearance in the Series. He was nursing a hamstring injury.
Gibson is also selling batting helmets, his World Series trophy, Most Valuable Player award and other memorabilia. His home jersey from Game One has a high bid of more than 80 thousand dollars.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kirk Gibson Foundation. The auction closes Saturday. Bids can be submitted at www.spauctions.com.
